Promoting Safety for Women: A Study of Sexual Harassment in Public Places

Abstract

Sexual harassment is a global issue which has serious consequences warrants attention. When more women live in urban areas and seek opportunities for education and work and are increasingly using public space and are at risk of sexual harassment impacting on their personal safety. This necessitates the consideration of gender-based safety concerns, while building safer cites. Only recently researchers are undertaking small scale research projects in conceptualizing the problem of sexual harassment for further inquiry especially in developing economies. Further to our knowledge, quantitative studies using large sample of incidents to comprehend the problem of sexual harassment is limited. In this paper we will illustrate the use of crowdsourced and online self-reported data to gain insight into sexual harassment experiences. We will examine the data reported at the Safecity.com, an online platform, launched in 2012 in India that allows women to report their experiences with sexual harassment and victimization. Using the environmental criminological theories, we explain the various contextual factors that could explain sexual harassment incidents (N=1904) in public places in Delhi, India that will inform situational crime prevention measures to address the elements of the environment which facilitate the occurrence of these incidences.
