I am neither of these two but our own cvs had some hick-ups in the past, 
too.

Some of the older versions of cvs require the existence of ~/.cvspass 
before login.

You could try (sh-style):

	CVSROOT=:pserver:USER at cvs.gromacs.org:/path/to/repository
        export CVSROOT 
	touch ~/.cvspass
	cvs login
