I actually find them useful to identify binaries (eg. 'ident `which
mdrun`' for the currently one in use)---especially if people ask me
why this and that is not working. Answer: because you are still using
this old binary...

In my own analysis programs I tend to print the Id string after the
header (perhaps a general -Version option would be a bit overkill,
though?).
