A google search turns up an HDF5 plugin for the Perl PDL::IO module:

http://search.cpan.org/~cerney/PDL-IO-HDF5-0.5/hdf5.pd

There are also Perl wrappers for limited functionality available from
the HDF5 group:

http://hdfgroup.org/projects/bioinformatics/bio_software.html

But who uses Perl anymore? :)
