[gmx-developers] vmdio and external source

How is the compilation of the external source code for vmd plugins 
controlled?

E.g.:
% nm libgromacs.a | grep vmddlclose
                  U _vmddlclose

in other words the routine vmddlclose is undefined as the 
external/vmd_molfile is not compiled in.

I don't see any directives about external in the CMakeLists.txt file.

This is a problem as some linkers want to resolve everything at compile 
time (Fedora 20 gcc (GCC) 4.8.2 20131212 (Red Hat 4.8.2-7)).

Clues?
