[gmx-developers] last beta for GROMACS 2016

Hi,

Now that we've finally had review of the fixes to release 2016 after we
rushed a complex merge from release-5-1, we can have a final beta. Tomorrow?

It's good to see people working on things for new releases next year, but
I'm beginning to regret not temporarily closing gerrit's master branch. The
process of dealing with the abovementioned merge reinforced my belief that
we don't have the developer activity necessary to sustain more than one
active bugfix branch. So next year I think we should close and de-support
release-2016 branch before we have the release-2017 beta, so that we have
only one active bugfix branch. Or we can close master during a release
phase. Your call, but we need simpler lives while we are managing our
annual release. :-)

I would greatly appreciate some more review of
https://gerrit.gromacs.org/#/c/5899/ - it looks big, but most of it is
testing infrastructure, or replacing complicated things with simpler
things. It is solving several problems reported by multiple users over
multiple years, for correctness, performance and usability. This would be
good to have in the last beta.

If all goes well, I'd like to do the final release end of next week. The
remaining issues in gerrit or redmine are not worth waiting around for.

Mark
