Right -- that works. But then I still have the problem that 
configure won't accept it's compile test... How can I change
that? 

It still seems like pretty lousy behavior for a compiler, I'd go 
as far as calling it a bug. I can see where the order of 
libraries might be important when they are interdependent, but the 
position of the source code file shouldn't make a difference :-(
