2.4 is fine. You can always compile gromacs on 2.2 too, but the SSE  
instructions were not supported until 2.4 kernels. We test this when  
you start mdrun though, so in that case you'll get an explicit  
message in the logfile that SSE isn't supported on this computer/OS.
