Actually the .gro, .g96, .g87 and .pdb formats can be used to contain
multiple structures, which can be interpreted as a trajectory. This is why
trjconv allows them all for output without constraining you to select a
particular frame...

I think you have a broken .xtc file. Use gmxdump and see.
