Instead of a[$1]==x&&$2==y; try
sqrt((a[$1]-x)^2)<=cutoff_x&&sqrt(($2-y)^2)<=cutoff_y

If I am interested in getting frames near the minimia and not actually on
it, how do I change the last if-statement?
