I tried to summarize all in my previous line, but indeed your table is 
better. I've added my lines below:

So, gcc 4.4.1 or 4.4.3 fail on Ubuntu, while 4.4.1 and 4.4.5 are ok. 
Unfortunately, I haven't figured out an easy way to change gcc and libc 
version independent of operating system type and version. But I can 
still try the other two gcc versions that come with Ubuntu 9.10.

Attached are two config logs, one with gcc 4.4.3 (which fails) and one 
with gcc 4.3.4 (which runs), both from Ubuntu 10.04.
