Forgot to mention that one should have balanced communication/computation
ratio. Computer power has gone up a lot, such that it makes sense to get
into faster communication hardware. If you go for e.g. dual athlons or
dual P4s at the highest clockspeed your nodes will be twice as fast as the
ones you have now. Checkout www.beowulf.org for comparisons of e.g.
gigabit network and myrinet/scali like things. gigabit network still uses
the linux tcp/ip stack, which means high latency (3 orders of magnitude
higher than scali).
