An alternative workaround could be to use the so-called 'MS-DOS' filenames
which still exist at least under Win2K. All files have a 'shadow' name in
the 8.3 format, with a '~1' appended (or '~2' etc. in case of doouble names).
For 'c:/Program Files', the MS-DOS name would be 'C:/PROGRA~1', the MD-DOS
name for e.g. 'c:/My Documents' would be 'C:/MYDOCU~1'.
